Second-degree and third-degree burn scar

They cannot be treated by simple scar removing creams. They need a professional treatment before reconstructive surgery to heal faster and reduce the chances of infection. The sooner you get treated, the better it is to prevent scarring.

Various treatments that can be done to remove burn scar

The treatments that can be done for second and third-degree burn scars are:

  • Skin grafting – This is a type of cosmetic surgery in which the healthy skin from hidden area of the body such as buttocks and inner thighs is removed by using a particular skin cutting instrument. Then the fresh skin is transplanted to the affected area to cover it. There are two types of skin grafting: split thickness grafting that involves transplantation of few layers of outer skin and full thickness grafting that involves transplantation of all of the dermis. These procedures take a quite less recovery time.
  • Dermabrasion – In this procedure, a surgeon uses an abrading tool to remove the upper layers of the damaged skin. In this procedure, the scar will remain, but it will become less visible.
  • Laser scar removal treatment – – In this treatment, different types of lasers are used to smoothen, flatten and remove the abnormal discoloration of the affected skin.
  • Z- Plasty – This is a surgical procedure in which a z- shaped incision is made to reduce the skin pull in the burn scar area. This procedure is also often used in blending the scar in the natural creases of the surrounding skin.
  • Skin flap surgery – This is a procedure that involves the total removal of the healthy skin including the underlying fat tissues, blood vessels, and the muscles from one part of the body to the affected area to reconstruct the area. This procedure is done in cases of severe burn scars.
  • Tissue expansion – – This is a reconstructive procedure that involves an increase in the number of existing tissues by inserting a balloon-like instrument under the skin of the scar area. This helps in the reconstruction of the damaged skin.
